The Wild Duck Pokemon

Normal/Flying

Farfetch’d, the Pokemon I’ve never ever cared for…Never saw it’s appeal or purpose, and always felt that it’s concept was pointless in the current state it is in.  That said, I know a large number of people enjoy the Pokemon, so I don’t want to say nasty things about this fellow…But I’ll simply say I could do without him.

So if that is my personal feelings on the fellow, what could I do to make it interesting?  As you can see, my Farfetch’d is a lot more vibrant in nature than what we have from GameFreak.  So I should discuss what I don’t like about Farfetch’d to begin with - boring color palette, not a particularly cool or cute looking Pokemon, no potential with an evolution, and someone largely forgettable outside of it’s ridiculous name.  I mean, there’s a damn apostrophe in it!

As for this visual direction I took, it kinda looks like something that walked out of Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, doesn’t it?  This was not intended but simply grew out of how I kept painting and trying to find an interesting way to present the creature.  I can come up with a redesign, but the idea of this series is to present these ideas in ways I haven’t before.  This pseudo-blocky three dimensional fusion of a concept was fun to paint in, and has a very distinct voice.  So anyway, onto the actual changes for the duck with a stick!

I like my version of Farfetch’d and it starts with making it visually striking.  All it took was simplying applying the colors of traditional “wild ducks”, which is how this bird Pokemon is labeled in the Pokedex.  I kept the three feather tufts from the old Farfetch’d which works by looking like the end of the leek that the Pokemon carries, an awesome coincidence that just simply makes the piece more powerful.  I gave it the white ring and even the random strip of blue as seen in the real world duck to give further distinction.  Orange feet adds even more color and now all of a sudden, Farfetch’d is no longer a boring or plain.

Doing research, I found that the whole concept of Farfetch’d flew over my head and was something my younger self wouldn’t have understood anyway.  Check it out here:25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_me6…

Pretty interesting, but it makes Farfetch’d even more pathetic in my eyes…However, his old plain brown coloring makes sense in that he could probably hide a bit better than my version, but that’s not my concern here.  With Farfetch’d being a target, I’d like to think my rendition of him, not being a Pokemon that evolves or evolves from anything, is a lot stronger in all areas.  He would be Fighting/Flying, and be very samurai like, using his leek like a sword or blade to fend off prey.  Farfetch’d to me, in this form is more desirable.

Hope you liked today’s work!  Thanks for viewing and reading, and see you tomorrow!

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon.  The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed.  This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.

The drawing is nice, but doesn't fit the pokemon. It's the inarnation of absurdeness.
