Atrocious Pokemon

Water/Flying Type

This is our fault.  If only we treated Magikarp, we might make it out of this sea alive…Welcome to Gyarados on Pokemon One a Day!

Magikarp, your splashing would not go in vain!  The glorious sea serpent Gyarados contains the rage that Magikarp could never share with its opponents - in this new form, the atrocious Pokemon seeks revenge by bringing destruction to all in its path.  For my illustration, I went with using negative space of the canvas to create the illusion of depth and play up the size of Gyarados.

The inspiration of this illustration and depiction goes back years and years ago, when I drew a series of mytholigical beasts that faced against one tiny little soldier.  They were really bad pieces but I loved them at the time because I had just gotten my tablet and felt like I was making strides towards getting better at it.  One of the pieces was a sea serpent, and I depicted it to be hundreds of miles long by playing with hiding the body under the water and letting portions of it appear over the surface.

This continues that idea, in a more basic way and conveys the length of the creature while also adding a sort of visual flair by concept alone.  The take is sorta realistic, with a few changes made to Gyarados’ appearance to make him look less derpy.  I’ve always hated his pig nose and ugly looking big mouth.  I’ve altered it in a slight way to make it look a bit more fierce - the shape fo the head is more aerodynamic than before, but still holds the brick wall of a face at the end of it.  The fins are treated a bit more realistically as well.

They’re torn, and the body contains soem scratches and scars.  The beast has seen battle, with humans and Pokemon it seems.  I wanted to showcase its nature and passion for rage, always locked in warfare and has the stories to tell the tales.  The dripping water is also a fun way to add to the piece, and again helps to play against the white of the canvas that is treated as the invisible sea to show case the drops of water hitting the surface.

Eventually, I just kind of made the beast wartorn and desaturated the colors while darkening the tones to add a gritty feel to the piece.  And then we get to this end result!  So what do you think?  Gyarados, pictures as the gigantic beast of the seas in a sort of elegant fashion!  Thanks guys for stopping by to check out the work!  See you tomorrow with another sea creature, albeit on the other spectrum of things!

Yours,

Bonny

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon.  The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed.  This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
