Hypnosis Pokemon

Psychic Type

Today’s illustration features Hypno, one of the creepiest Pokemon to ever grace the Pokedex.  The problem lies within the fact that the Pokemon is very humanoid in appearance.  5 fingers on each hand, the general bipedal stance, and a nose…Except for some reason it’s so gorram big.  Why!?  Is it supposed to be homage to the tapir trunk found on Drowzee?

Hypno isn’t exactly my favorite Pokemon, and the various undertones with hypnotism further enhances his creep factor.  His design is simple and pretty boring, including the direction of coloring.  I had my pose down quite early, and played around with it until I got one I liked.  However, this is a very “expected” direction and to enhance the image a bit, I decided to place Hypno to the side and have the pendulum sit in the middle to make the composition a bit more exciting.

In between, I tried rotating his head, moving the arms around, playing with the foreshortening of the legs and so on.  The pose wasn’t going to be the problem when all of this was done, though.  It was going to be how everything might rest within the outline.  I decided to just keep moving along, and hope for the best.

I began to clean up and color, and try to zone in on a new art style to use.  I eventually found a airbrush look I liked but even still, it was too plain and not adventurous.  I mean, we’re working with an all yellow Pokemon with some white to break it up a bit, so I needed a new way to spruce it up.  Fortunately, thanks to my take on Hypno being calm and meditative during his hypnosis abilities rather than being open eyed and frightening, I collaged over patterns that one might find being applied by henna paint in Indian weddings.  This texture infuses a new level of energy into the work, but not an energy that is excitable and moving…But one more calm and serene.

The overall work is nothing groundbreaking, but the pattern did a lot of heavy lifting and now I know what to look for when a piece feels lacking!  Hypno in this piece avoids looking like a stalker or someone on the neighborhood watch, which is a victory in itself.  I hope you enjoyed today’s work!  See you tomorrow!

Yours,

Bonny

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon.  The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed.  This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.

I can't say that this picture takes me away from that inicial link Sweating a little...  - but it does look Cool! Very calm, as you expressed. Worthy of respect. :)
