So after all these Pokemon, I was finally stumped!  Well, I guess not fully, because we do have an illustration before us…But regardless, Lickitung was a tough one to produce!  Right outta the gates, I kept fumbling in producing a draft that I could really get behind.  Nothing I was trying seemed to fit.  Lickitung in itself isn’t the most exciting of Pokemon but he is very unique in his own right…what was the problem then?  

I continued to draft up concepts, coming up with various ways to present the tongue, the prize feature of the Pokemon…So what could I do with the one with 6 foot long tongue?  I would try some creepypasta stuff, cutesy stuff…and then I decided to move from forming new styles onto making connections with real world creatures to the Pokemon.  It was at that point the draft for a chameleon inspired Lickitung was born.  Lickitung as a creature is rather ambiguous in origin.  I like Pokemon like that because it feels more “unique” to itself and the world it comes from.

I stylized a “Nightmare before Christmas-ish” tongue which eventually got soften and extended to the tongue seen in the illustration.  Going round and plump would be the best fit, and I slowly filled out the creature.  The work otherwise is pretty straight forward - it’s painted with soft colors and uses some light outlines to define a few areas.  In contrast, some darker outlines edge out the form with some speckled marks to add even more character to the colors.  

I would only hope that the few changes I made to Lickitung, specifically the way it’s tongue is depicted and the head into that of a Chameleon (with a tail that echoes the tail as a visual connection) makes for an interesting illustration for today!  Thanks for looking and see you tomorrow a new piece!
