The young Cyndaquil wakes up from his nap and has evolved into a battle ready Quilava.More than his fighting ability, his fabulous Super Saiyan hair stops all foes in their tracks. Youshould be jealous your head's not on fire like my man over here.

With Bayleef, I got an illustration and direction down that felt elegant and graceful. Today's look at the fire starter "teenager" doesn't feature any specific art style like the grass teen but more of a focus on the creature's personality. As the middle stage, Quilava represents a brash young fighter, so I gave him a pose showcasing his determination for all things battle.

The true main focus was built however, on how I would represent the flames as I stated in Cyndaquil's write up yesterday. Where Cyndaquil had cute tiny flame bubbles, I thought of something more ribbon-y for Quilava. I love that Quilava looks like a punk rocker in his design - the Pokemon team gave him a freakin' mohawk for crying out loud. 

I realized I could have fun with it and eventually gave him a single stringy bang like a few of the fighters in DBZ. That to me is the highlight of the piece, as simple and silly as it may seem!

The color approach was to go with gradient and soft shading, with colored outlines which make the subject pop a bit more. This is in contrast to the soft chalky texture of yesterday's creature. What does this mean for Typhlosion that will debut on Monday...?
