Dragon Pokemon

Water Type

Ok, I see you’re stilled labeled as the Dragon Pokemon now that you’ve become Seadra, Horsea.  I suppose accepting that (knowing that he evolves into an actual dragon Type as Kingdra) came into play in shaping today’s illustration for the day - this piece is juxtaposed against yesterday’s in a number of ways - darker colors, facing the opposite direction, and features strong, sharp elements opposed to yesterday’s small and frail disposition.

Seadra as a whole is treated in a way that plays up minimal features within the form - the exception being the spiraled tail and the chest scales  Otherwise, the flat surface has what appears to be some depth with the introduction of light and dark values to break up the flow of gradation.

This, once again, is in response to Horsea which featured a number of details from head to toe, being very defined all throughout.  Seadra is painted with care as the tones flow throughout the body - a sky blue dips to a cerulean and then follows light again until it spirals into navy.  There’s a sense of being sucked into the tail, which brings a lot of weight to the piece, for better or for worse.

What this means is that your eye kind of trails to that area first - it is the most dynamic part of the piece.  The rest of the piece is more simple, and features very aggressive shapes in their own way - this Seadra looks like it could be a tribal tattoo when stripped down of all the elements that make it the illustration it is today.

Refining of the work focused on creating the right movement to form the silhouette that houses the ocean-like blue and sand-colored features.  The contour that trails along the edges all feature curved lines - none are straight at any point of the piece.  As your eyes follow this contour, you can see where each curve begins and ends - it’s very defined in this way, and tells why the piece has such a powerful, flowy shape.

So what do you think?  Does Seadra now live up to the dragonic nature that defines him and his evolution?  Hope you enjoyed today’s artwork and write up.  With a lot of trial and error, I got down the right features and shape for the work and can now focus on another water type that will see features opposite of this one…But as usual, in a style you haven’t seen before.  Stay tuned for the next installment of Pokemon One a Day!

Yours,

Bonny

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon.  The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed.  This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
