I made it to 50 straight illustrations without missing a day!  Yahoooooo!!!

Pokemon One a Day : Diglett

Mole Pokemon

Ground

Diglett is yet another design in generation 1 that I'm not a big fan of.  I know, I sound like a broken record.  Yeah, its a cute little thing but that's about that...And do not get me started on Dugtrio...Oh just you wait and see when his art comes out...He's about to get butchered!  But today is a day we examine Diglett, the mole Pokemon.

And right there thanks to the Pokedex I knew how I wanted to approach this illustration.  I wouldn't call Diglett's design "iconic" but its very well known and as a Pokemon with just its head peeking out (we assume), it can't be represented in a lot of different ways.  If anything, just the facial expression might change and that too is a stretch.  You've got a nose and some eyes, and bam!  That's Diglett for ya.  I wanted to keep him in his traditional look and pose and just add some subtle details for big effect.

I'm talking about giving him a snout, like a mole, and having that pink nose of his sit at the tip.  Part of the fun of designing is to re-brand and give direction to the source material.  Diglett can use slash in the games...Anyone wanna tell me how?  Well, with my illustration, we see has proper mole hands to actually do so.  Texture is non-existent in the original, and I gave him some proper fur to give some value to his body.  I thought to do course rough fur because he's underground and digging so it shouldn't be so clean and fine but for illustrative purposes and to bolster his usual form/silhouette, I illustrated it in a tidy manner.

Keeping the original eyes, nose, and shape of the body, I wanted to present how little changes cold really improve his design.  His eyes are very close to one another, so I didn't realize that was what was bothering me about my take.  His snout now jutting out, only last minute did I change the distance between the eyes and it really made quite an impact.  I added some saturation to where the light was touching, which is rather subtle and then also made sure to add some shadow cast by the snout for some added depth.

I had a lot of fun coming up with another part of Diglett's design, which is not bodily but his habitat/environment.  Diglett has some art featuring him burying through rocky, sandy, earthy areas.  I decided to go the latter, and throw in some stones and grass to sit amongst all the brown and orange.

This was one of those pieces where I saw the end result before I even got started, and I'm happy with the direction I took and I too hope you enjoy the work.  Ladies and gentlemen, it's been 50 illustrations since I started and I wanted to thank you all for the support, kind comments, sharing of the project, and whatever else little things you've done to help me out.  Stay tuned for that announcement regarding this project!

Thanks for reading and viewing my work, and enjoy your weekend!

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon.  The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed.  This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
