The Magnet Pokemon

Electric/Steel Type

What’s this!?  A wild CGI rendition of Magnemite has appeared on Pokemon One a Day!  Yes, it’s true!  Astrokid by ways of Tumblr posted about a program called “Sculptris” a program, that has been around for a while, and digital sculpting is something I’ve always wanted to get into.  With Sculptris being a free program, I figured there was nothing to lose and everything to gain.  I got the program a while back, and have admittedly not used it as much as I wanted as sadly my PC stutters when using it.  I was originally trying to render out Graveler and make my debut with CGI back then, but I gave up on the program when it kept crashing.

I realized Magnemite would be a perfect fit as soon as I opened the program and found a sphere waiting to be manipulated.  Hey, that’s half of my work done for me, yay!  I began playing around with it more and more, and had to limit my creative output with my technical skill with something I’ve had less than 3 hours of experience with.  As such, it was all about taking my time and coming up with a work that fits the standard I try and set for myself.  Because I wasn’t completely familiar with the program and it’s capabilities, I had to take care of the end game stage of illustration in Photoshop.

Working with this Sculptris and creating a work in this fashion definitely diversifies the set of illustrations that have come to be known as Pokemon One a Day.  By creating 98 percent of the work in Sculptris, I will still consider the work largely created from there, with Photoshop duties responsible for removing the background of the work-space, additional shading in lighting and shadows, smoothing out forms, and adding color for the tips that are the magnets.  Specifically, creating the wedge for the floating orb in set in the middle for the eye is something that photoshop helped with.  Otherwise, the eye would look very plain, boring, and worse of all, unfinished.

Onto Magnemite, the concept was all about making something organic out of something so cold and robotic.  Magnemite is a fun, silly, and unique design that really has its own voice.  For my take, I wanted to to make the Pokemon appear man-made, like a science project gone wrong.  However, rather than making it look like it was put together in a traditional sense, I’d like to think some living metal came to be and took on the shapes of the lab it was created in by observation.  Thus, the magnets have a very clean but melded on look that sets it apart from the original.  Of course, understand that whatever is here is the technical limitations I have with a program I am unfamiliar with whilst working on it on the day it was due, like every other illustration!

So yeah, I hope you enjoyed today’s work!  It was definitely a chance of pace and I’m sure one you never saw coming.  It’s definitely not my strongest work, and I can easily admit it, but I think it’s important I take risks and chances like this is I want to get better and stay true to the nature of this project.  As always, thanks for looking and reading!  By the way, if you’ve got tips for digital sculpting, be sure to let me know.  I’m always willing and eager to learn, and this first foray is one of many.

Much love,

Bonny

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon.  The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed.  This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
