The Drill Pokemon
Poison/Ground Type
My basis for this illustration was to emphasize "the matriarch". Kangaskhan is known to be the "mommy" Pokemon but truthfully, every female should be considered as such. Pokemon are not just creatures to be tamed and used for battle...They also have their own will and lives and so I wanted to illustrate Nidoqueen in an intimate moment.

Many people have speculated the Nido family to be a combination of a number of animals, and in specific the rabbit is specified to a degree. I explored that with the first form, Nidoran, and the more "reptilian" side with Nidorina in a softer element. This illustration of Nidoqueen is a combination of the two. Her ears are closer to a rabbit as you can see here and her body is shaped round like an egg (maybe I made an easter bunny connection in my head while I drew!) and in general is inspired by the "Venus of Willendorf", a sculpture to have been estimated to be created 25,000 years ago. The Venus of Willendorf is thought to be a fertility idol of sorts, emphasizing and exaggerating parts of the human body that made the female form quite godly, to say in the least due to its ability to create children. Thus, it felt perfect to base "the queen" on such a famous statue(ette).
Nidoqueen is apparently unable to breed...meanwhile Nidoking can...Rather strange. That said, for the sake of this illustration, let's excuse that. Apparently in the anime it was shown that it could, so if you really want to nitpick, there's that :P

Anyway, when it came to the drawing, I put in the Nidoran (male) egg to balance out the colors. I'm not sure what Pokemon egg looks like according to lore but I've seen people interpret them a the Pokemon that's inside them. I took that chance to color the egg pink so it could stand out against the blue. Only later on in the process did I decide to have it glow, and hatch which forced me to start adding shadows, which I'm still trying to learn/master. The work started off with a glowing blue hue all throughout but it started to fade, so eventually i saturated the glowy side and desaturated the other to push it back into space.

Okay, so that about wraps it up! Hope you enjoyed the work and the Nidoran female line! Please look forward to tomorrow's work and be sure to share this project around! See you then!

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the entire catalogue of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.

I was wondering what that purple thing was when I first saw it, nice take on the female half of the Nidoran family
