Ninetales - Pokemon One a Day!

Fox Pokemon

Fire Type

Today’s Pokemon for the day is…Amaterasu!? You’ve got your Okami mixed with my Pokemon! Is that a euphemism for something? Somewhere deep down in the bowels of the internet, it probably is.

Naaah chill. Today we look at Ninetales, who is aptly named for its…beautiful fur, dormant psychic abilities, its style and grace, and their love for pachinko.

I drew out Ninetales with the idea of having its tails on display, something exaggerated and very focused on the elements that gave her such a horrible name (translation error I’m hoping). Within seconds of my draft, it was no longer my concern. I just HAD to go the style of Sumi-e and woodblock print style…And Okami was clearly my inspiration.

I was going to use such a style for a depiction of a Fearow styled as a crane, believe it or not. I decided to get rid of that route so that I may save it for one Scyther, who I imagined up as a dual katana wielding samurai (hmm…maybe I can still salvage that). Instead, I delivered that style for Ninetales, and I couldn’t be any happier. Also, I took it a few steps further by adding a little bit of a background to further enhance the notion of ink of canvas as well as changing up the numbering format I’ve used thus far. Last we had a “custom” number was Pikachu, who had glitter flying about his number 25.

When it comes to this project, the exploration of styles is traditionally reserved for me coming up with whatever way I can depict a Pokemon appropriately. There are times where I want to go in one direction but if it doesn’t fit that Pokemon, then there’s no way I can attempt it. I’ve stayed away from explicitly borrowing a style until today, because I think it just works and I couldn’t pass up on it. Other styles I’ve thought about trying out for various Pokemon include Adventure Time, Yoji Shinkawa ink style (artist behind MGS), Studio Ghibli style, and many many more. I’m going to try and stay away from outside styles until the Pokemon itself is really calling for it. At times, I’m sure my work will appear similar to existing styles, but isn’t that to be expected? I don’t own a single style, nor does anyone else. You kind of just work into it and if my work crosses streams into other styles, then that’s more of accident than by choice, for future reference.

Anyway, onto Ninetales! According to Professor Wik. E. Paedia, “kyubi no kitsune”, or nine tail fox(es) are creatures that have the ability to see or hear anything happening anywhere in the world. The fox can only have its tails split into more and more after living over 100 years of age. The number of tails these foxes have will dictate their age, wisdom, and strength. When the fox reaches its 9th tail…they turn white or gold..kind of like our old friend Ninetales here.

By the way, Nintendo, fantastic job on translating the name. Really, just one of your greatest works. I gotta say, when I think of Ninetales, I just feel like you guys could have stopped there and shipped the game with 38 Pokemon, so long as Ninetales was the last one.

And there you have it! One Ninetales! And not of your Naruto variety. I bet a bunch of the younger folk might be wondering where one orange ninja might be but he’s not in this post! Now scram before I sexy no jutsu you. As always, thanks for reading and viewing! Do continue your efforts and help me get this project out there by sharing and do look forward to tomorrow’s work!

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.

It's a bit ironic considering that Ninetails was one of Okami's biggest enemies, and pokemon based on Ninetails on this art also have some of Okami's style as well.
